New Videos - April 2019 Part 3!

One last set of videos before we finish the month of April.  We've got a good mix of things here, ranging from classic 70s rock, to 80s anthemic sounds, to 90s power metal.  Check it out!

Whitesnake is back with another album of sleazy hard rock.  While the first few singles were just okay, here we have them really piling on the 80s anthemic sound.  With the shout-style chorus, they almost sound like Def Leppard!

Enforcer is here to revive the classic sound of metal from the early 80s, full of energy and speed, and not much else.  And I mean that in a good way!  Seriously, this is about as straight-forward and classic as it gets!

I can't help it!  If it's fast, epic, and melodic, I'm gonna love it!  Here we have Frozen Crown, a newer power metal band from Italy, and this song is giving me a massive last 90s power metal vibe, like Stratovarius or Edguy or Fourth Legacy era Kamelot!  Amazing!!

The album this one comes from is titled In Another Time, which is very appropriate for this piece 70s metal.  Adding in some folky and proggy elements, this sounds somewhere between early Rush and early Rainbow, but with dual guitar leads like Kansas!

Well, this is different.  Taking their progressive metal roots and adding in a dash of anthemic 80s sounds, Mind Key makes it a great track of epic melodic metal.  Aurelio Fierro Jr's voice is what really holds it together, having that right mix of gritty and charismatic elements.  Italy knows how to make some great prog!

Let's end with another throwback rock artist, The Vintage Caravan.  This trio seems to live in the late-60s, early-70s, calling up vibes one would get from Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, and Blue Oyster Cult.  Between the smooth vocals and psychedelic noodling, there's a lot to like here!

New Videos - April 2019 Part 2!

Like I promised, I'm listening to more and more stuff!  I might be able to get one more article out by the end of the month, but this set of videos should tide you over in the meantime.  Let's get rocking!

Arch / Matheos is a side project that features a number of Fates Warning members past and present.  With this lead single, we get a very technical, but power piece of prog metal that really soars!

One more Alan Parsons single before the new album.  Definitely staying with the ballad vibe, but I think this one is stronger than the other two.  I think it's the classic symphonic touches that help make this song sound better.

Epic symphonic metal with Chilean vocalist Caterina Nix.  While the new album won't have former Stratovarius shredder Timo Tolkki, they plan to move forward with the project, and if this song is anything to go by, we should be in for some good stuff!

First Signal is back with a pounding piece of AOR.  Seriously, these drums sound powerful!  And the rest is just as good, with lots of melodic hooks and a big, driven chorus.  Solid piece of melodic rock!

Jack Slamer is something of a psychedelic, bluesy, hard rock band, and they really pound it out with this one.  For those who like their rock to be driven, hard, with a bit of flair.

Let's finish off with a great piece of heavy/power metal!  Here we have Diviner really crushing it, with some great riffs and melodies from the guitars, and epic vocals from Yiannis Papanikolaou!!  This sounds amazing!

Small Update - Spotify Playlists!

Hey, rockers!  Just a short post this time.

I've decided that I should try to integrate more elements into my blog, and a big one is Spotify.  If you go back through my New Videos posts, you will now see Spotify playlists at the end of them.  I've decided to group them by month, which is why you'll see the same playlist on a few playlists.

I admit I haven't used Spotify much, but I do know that it's very popular platform for listening to music, and if I want to support new rock bands and their music, I should do at least this much.  I also have some other ideas for playlists that I might share in the future as well.

If there other platforms you'd like playlists for, let me know and I will look into them.

That's pretty much it.  I know things seem to have slowed down for April, but I assure you I'm still rocking along and listening to all kinds of things.  Keep an eye out for more articles before the end of the month, at least.

Until then, rock on!  \m/

New Videos - April 2019!

April showers bring . . . rock videos?  That seems to be the case.  We've got a curious collection of songs here, but they all stand out in their own way.  Check them out!

Another single for Alan Parsons's upcoming album, and I think this one is a little better than the first one.  Parsons is really channeling his mid-80's sound with these ballads.  My only concern, now, is if the album is going to be nothing but ballads.

One thing you can say for Neal Morse is that he's prolific.  Here we have the first single of his rock opera about the life of Jesus Christ, and it seems to be a quick blast 70s rock similar to Deep Purple and Kansas!  I suppose there have been weirder ways to tell Bible stories.

Jon Anderson of Yes also has a solo album coming out, and if this single is anything to go by, it might not be heavy on the rock, it is very Jon Anderson!  The video is cute in a dorky way, but it's his voice that carries the song, which is to be expected.  Fun stuff!

Grand Magus has been pounding out their brand of heavy/doom metal for a while, and here we have them blasting out something epic.  I've always been a fan of epic doom metal, and this sounds great!  Nice and crunchy!

More epicness!  Here we have Battle Beast giving us a song about the Mongols!  Noora really gives her all with this power metal track, but then again, I suppose at this point that's to be expected!

And to finish things off, let's go with some Crazy Lixx!  This band really proves that glam metal can still sound great, with some catchy riffs and a sing-along chorus.  It's like the 80s never ended!  (And I mean that in a good way!)

Last Played - March 2019 Part 2!

It's time for another installment of "Last Played" and once again, I'm hitting albums from all decades!  Here's what I've been headbanging to for the last few weeks.

Dragonland - Starfall

Yup, on to the next Dragonland album.  With this one, they set aside their epic storytelling for a more standard set of songs, and I think this one is their strongest yet.  While the lyrics remain melodramatic and the tone sweeping and epic, the songwriting feels stronger than their previous efforts.

Still, the band is still telling stories, such as the mini epic of “The Shores of Our Land,” the Charles Manson inspired “Calling My Name”, and the ambitious, mostly instrumental three-parter “The Book of Shadows.”  However, the songs that stand out to me are the title track “Starfall” and “The Returning,” maybe because they’re more straight-forward power metal songs.  Oh, and the Helloween cover is solid as well.

What sets this album apart from their previous efforts, though, is how they push into progressive metal territory.  While they’ve had dashes of it in the past, mostly with their full album stories, here the songwriting on this album shifts better from mood to mood, augmenting their power metal chops.  Definitely an improvement!

Pearl Jam - Vs.

While I’m going forward with the Dragonland albums, I’m going backward with Pearl Jam!  Once again, I’m diving into the classic grunge, and that’s definitely what this album has to offer.  I do think this one is a little more raw and confrontational than either Ten or Vitalogy, but I suppose with a title like Vs., that should be expected.

To be honest, there wasn’t much that stood out to me.  It was mostly a solid chunk of thick guitars with some nice riffs, and Eddie Vedder’s iconic vocals drenching everything with his moods, be it somber or angry.  Again, if this is your thing, you probably have this already.

Queen - Queen

While I’ve heard Queen’s big hits on classic rock stations all my life, I haven’t spent much time with their studio albums, so on a whim, I decided to dig deep into the history of rock and listen to Queen’s first album.

Right off the bat, there is no mistaking the band.  Between Mercury’s dynamic vocals and May’s iconic guitar harmonies, it seems Queen already had the elements of their iconic sound from the beginning.  If there is anything unexpected, it’s that the songs have more of a progressive rock style to them, with complex arrangements and guitar riffs.  Overall, the album is fairly eclectic, but that would only serve as a precursor for what would come.

However, the album does have its flaws.  Some of the songs end rather anticlimactically, and the energy seems to fade in the second half.  The songs are not necessarily bad, but they don’t have the same level of drive and dynamics as the first half’s material.  Still, a fun album for taking a peek into the early sounds of an iconic band.

Nightwish - Dark Passion Play

I remember when this album came out, as it was the first after Tarja Turunen’s controversial dismissal.  We all wondered what kind of album Nightwish was going to make with this new singer, and when it landed, it did pretty well, but I remember having a few qualms.  I recently relistened to it to see if time has helped make this album stand on its own.

And honestly, my opinion hasn’t really improved.  This album has the band really shifting away from their classic power metal sound into something more versatile, with more progressive and folk metal elements.  As a consequence, the songs don’t seem quite as powerful, though they remain just as dramatic as ever, with the epic symphonic scores behind the guitars.

That being said, there are still some good tracks here, mostly notably “Bye Bye Beautiful,” “Amaranthe,” and “Last of the Wilds.”  And while she may not have the same sonic presence as Turunen, Azette Olzen is still an adequate singer with her own take on this style of music.  Perhaps not the band at their best, in my opinion, but definitely one in transition, as they move into new genres and territories.

Well, that's the latest from me.  I know I was kind of getting into a groove there, only to have it fall apart again.  I think that's just how things are going to be for now.  I know it's not great to have posts be so sporadic, but I think it's the best I can do for now.  However, I am enjoying this, and that helps a lot.  So here's to more rock!
